This book elaborates the transition history of clothing in modern China from five aspects: fashion comments ,fashion advertisements, fashion photography, fashion show and beauty art. Before the Hsinhai Revolution (the 1911 Revolution in China), Chinese makeup look basically followed the traditional way and was slightly influenced by foreign elements. After Hsinhai Revolution and the May Fourth Movement, what China got from the West was not only “Qi” (machine and technology), but also “Tao” (thought and ideology). It is the revolution in thought that caused Chinese makeup look almost changeless over thousands of years to change radically. Beauty Art depicts and analyzes characteristics of makeup look from all periods of modern history from various aspects, including hairstyle, makeup look, makeup techniques and fashionable characters. The sector of fashionable characters specially sketches out images of persons surfing on time tide, making this book both of historic significance and academic value. The book is illustrated with hundreds of color photographs and contemporary portraits, and demonstrates changes of beauty art over the past one hundred years more clearly and vividly. As a monograph on the make up history of modern China, the book is an essential reference for colleagues, scholars, teachers and students as well as art lovers.
